What is TESA?
TESA is a minimally invasive technique used to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles in men who have little or no sperm in their ejaculate. It is typically performed under local anesthesia and involves inserting a fine needle into the testicle to aspirate fluid and tissue, which is then examined for sperm.
The retrieved sperm are then used in IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to fertilize a partner’s eggs.
Who Needs TESA?
TESA is recommended for men with:
- Obstructive Azoospermia (normal sperm production but a blockage in the reproductive tract)
- Non-obstructive Azoospermia (very low sperm production due to testicular issues)
- Ejaculatory dysfunction due to spinal injury, diabetes, or other conditions
- Prior vasectomy with no desire for surgical reversal
- Failed ejaculation during an IVF cycle

How is TESA Performed?

- The testicular area is numbed with local anesthesia.
- A small needle is inserted into the testicle to withdraw sperm-rich tissue.
- The sample is examined in the lab to identify viable sperm.
- If found, the sperm are either used immediately for ICSI or cryopreserved for future use.
The procedure is quick (15–20 minutes) and virtually painless, with no stitches or hospital stay required.
