What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a reproductive treatment designed to boost fertility and enhance the likelihood of conception. During this process, a specially prepared sperm sample, either from a partner or a donor, is gently inserted into the uterus at the optimal time, typically when the woman is ovulating. This process is typically performed in a fertility clinic setting.

For whom IUI is for?

Unexplained infertility is when a couple is in good health, yet fertility tests do not uncover any reasons for their infertility.

Conception with donated sperm: Donor sperm can be used for IUI to help single individuals or LGBTQ+ families start a family, or to prevent the transmission of a genetic disorder that may be carried by the male partner.

Challenges like low sperm counts and poor sperm motility can hinder natural fertilization, but placing concentrated sperm directly into the uterus can improve the chances of successful fertilization.

Problems related to irregular ovulation may also be addressed by IUI.

Prior to undergoing Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), you and your healthcare provider will determine the most appropriate approach to stimulate the production of one or more eggs. Some patients may proceed with IUI following natural ovulation, while others may require medications, either orally or through injections, to induce egg production (Superovulation).

Ovulation Monitoring

Blood tests and ultrasounds are used over a two-week period to track ovulation.

Ovulation Induction

An injection of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) may be given to stimulate the ovary to release the egg, ensuring precise timing for the IUI procedure scheduled 24 to 36 hours post-ovulation.

Semen Sample Preparation

The male partner or donor provides a semen sample on the day of the IUI procedure. The sample undergoes a washing process to separate active sperm from the rest. Alternatively, frozen donor sperm may be utilized and prepared on the same day.

IUI Process Step by step:

Step-by-Step IUI Procedure - The IUI procedure is brief, lasting only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia or pain medication.

During an intrauterine insemination (IUI), a speculum is inserted into the vagina to allow the doctor to view the cervix similar to a routine Pap test. Following this, a flexible plastic tube, known as a catheter, is passed through the cervix.

The sperm sample is then pushed through the catheter and into the uterus using a syringe. Once the procedure is complete, the catheter and speculum are removed.

It is recommended to rest for a short period after the IUI before resuming normal activities. Some individuals may experience cramping similar to menstrual cramps and light spotting for a day or two following the procedure.

Risks and Side Effects of IUI

IUI is considered a low-risk procedure, and Dr Deep Gajiwala work to reduce any potential risks. While rare, there is a small chance of infection or accidental uterine puncture. Additionally, there is a risk of multiple eggs being fertilized, leading to the possibility of twins or triplets. It's important to note that a multiple pregnancy can present health risks for both the mother and the babies.

IUI Results

After two weeks following IUI, you should use a home pregnancy test to check for pregnancy. It is important not to use an at-home test too early, as it may not provide an accurate result. If the IUI is successful, your fertility doctor can support you during your pregnancy. If the first IUI attempt is not successful, many individuals opt for another round of the procedure. Compared to IVF, IUI is a less invasive fertility treatment choice.
